The aim of this workshop is to offer participants a practical guide to manage their own emotions in the workplace, to increase their ability and skill to relate to their students or colleagues in a compassionate and honest way, and to improve their communication skills when addressing mental health issues.</p>
<p><strong>Contents</strong><br />- Use the tools and mindset of Nonviolent Communication for self-management as well as for managing your team in a healthy and sustainable way.<br />- You will practice listening for feelings and needs behind interpretations and evaluations – both your own and others’.<br />- You will learn from practice examples of other course participants and be invited to share your own.</p>

Session 1: Getting Started as a Supervisor<p><strong>About the Series</strong><br />Starting as a postdoc, junior group leader or junior professor, it is usually expected to supervise doctoral candidates. Supervision however is one of the tasks that are so "normal" in academia that we quite often neglect to further explain and prepare: "Everybody knows what supervision is so we don’t need to talk about it." – As a result of this mindset, researchers who start supervising quite often feel abandoned.</p>
<p>The series of short workshops Approaches to Good Supervision addresses different aspects of supervision and provides insights into different aspects and requirements to gain skills (and confidence) to supervise.</p>
<p>The approach developed specifically for this topic illuminates the supervision of doctoral researchers from the sociological role theory and describes "supervision" with the three terms: Lead, Train and Facilitate.</p>
<p><strong>Session 1: Getting Started as a Supervisor</strong><br />The first session starts with exchanging on experiences and ideas to define supervision. Thereafter we will discuss whether sociological role theory might help to better define what is needed to be a supervisor. Finally we will take a glance at the concept of "leadership styles".</p>

However, the traditional method of presenting fact-laden scientific narratives often proves inadequate in an age where scientists are encouraged to communicate their research to varied audiences.</p>
<p>The medium of comics, with its predominantly visual nature, emerges as a tool for disseminating information to a wide range of people. To transition scientific content into comic format, however, you need to distill and streamline complex information, and possibly work together with comic artists. </p>
<p>In this short workshop, you will gain insights into a framework designed for crafting comics based on scientific topics. This includes building a conceptual foundation, setting up a scientifically relevant environment and characters, and developing a comprehensive storyboard. Additionally, we will talk about the working process of developing a comic together with an illustrator.</p>
<p>Examples from various science comic projects are showcased to illustrate how scientific concepts can be transformed into graphic representations, how to weave scientific facts into a storyline that is both straightforward and engaging, how to create a background narrative and blend simple language with consistent comic elements, enhancing both understanding and recall. These examples demonstrate the versatility of comics in making complex scientific ideas accessible and memorable to a diverse audience.</p>
