New MS – Proposal for a new isotope-ratio mass spectrometer with periphery for the measurements of 12C/13C- and 15N/14N-ratios in gas, liquids and solids
The department of “Biogeochemistry” investigates the interaction and biogeochemical cycling of elements in the compartments lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. The dynamics of elements cycles on variable temporal and spatial scales, under natural conditions and anthropogenic disturbance is being analyzed. Mass fluxes, organic- and inorganic-geochemical analyses and isotopic signatures of gases as well as dissolved and particulate matter allow the characterization of biogeochemical cycles. The present major mass spectrometer of the isotopic laboratory (Finnigan MAT252) can partly not be serviced with spare parts any more. The projects as well as most of the theses work of the department depend on this instrument so that a replacement is urgently required and has been granted by the DFG.
