Project: WAKOS
Wasser an den Küsten Ostfrieslands: Maßgeschneiderte Klimaservices für die Anpassung
Prof. Dr. Beate MW Ratter, Dipl.-Geogr. Anke Wessels
Project duration: 1.06.2020 to 29.02.2024 (1st funding phase); 01.03.2024 to 28.02.2027 (2nd funding phase)
WAKOS is a German acronym that stands for “Water at the coast of East Frisia – Tailor-made climate services for adaptation”. The joint project WAKOS is a research project in the funding measure "Regional Information for Climate Action" (RegIKlim), part of the framework program "Research for Sustainability" (FONA3) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In this transdisciplinary project, scientists from northern German research institutions and universities are working together with regional and local stakeholders from the East Frisia study region to promote climate change adaptation in the region and strengthen society's resilience.
Water and the associated natural hazards pose major challenges for stakeholders on the mainland and on the East Frisian Islands. The expected rise in sea level, storm surges, heavy rainfall events and temperature increases play a key role here. If these events occur as so-called compound events in certain combinations, they can have serious consequences for the coastal population. One example is the combined occurrence of storm surges and heavy rainfall, which can lead to widespread flooding in the low-lying coastal region. Early adaptation of municipalities and associations to the consequences of climate change requires not only an awareness of the growing risks and region-specific information, but also the will to prepare for the expected effects. To this end, WAKOS provides information on the local characteristics and consequences of climate change as well as on possible adaptation options and shows stakeholders and society ways to implement them. The implementation of the concept of a climate adaptation academy and a coastal climate information platform developed in the first project phase is the focus of the second project phase. The aim is to create a low-threshold service to make information available and applicable to specific target groups.
