On November 26, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) hosted the event “Bioeconomy for a sustainable future - 10 years of ‘bioeconomy as social change’” at the Design Offices in Bonn. During the one-day conference, representatives from various scientific projects presented their projects and findings from the last ten years. In addition, the current and future role of social science research in the bioeconomy was discussed.
Framed by greetings and closing words from the ministry, five “lighthouse projects” were presented to the interested audience. Four other projects were introduced in so-called power pitches. The scientists drew the conclusions of the day in a debate on the question “Quo vadis bioeconomy and society”. The full program of the congress is available here (German only).
The head of the junior research group “Meat The Bioeconomy” from the University of Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Christin Bernhold, presented the Hamburg research project in her lecture “Meat The Bioeconomy - The meat industry as part of the bioeconomy: internationalization, work geographies and hegemonic strategies”. In addition, two of her colleagues, the two post-doctoral researchers John Lütten and Emilia Ormaechea, used posters to illustrate and explain their sub-projects to interested colleagues.
Researchers from the social, political and economic sciences have been working on the transformation to a bio-based economy in the “Bioeconomy as societal change” funding measure since 2014. Almost 50 research alliances and individual projects from academia, industry and society have been funded by the BMBF with more than 60 million euros in mostly biennial calls for proposals.
