Mathia Sabino, a graduate student from the University of Torino (Italy), has been awarded a doctoral scholarship in accordance with the “Hamburg Act of the Promotion of Young Researchers and Artists” from Universität Hamburg. His project entitled “The impact of extreme environmental conditions on microorganisms in the geological past: insights from the late Miocene Messinian Salinity Crisis” commenced on April 1 under the supervision of Jörn Peckmann and Francesco Dela Pierre (University of Torino). The aim of the project is to unravel the impact of extreme environmental conditions on microorganisms in ancient semi-enclosed basins, focussing on the late Miocene Messinian Salinity Crisis. The results of the project will provide new insight on the relationships between extreme environmental conditions and adaptive strategies of biota in the geological past, representing an important step forward in the study of ancient hypersaline environments.
