Young researcher award to Mathia Sabino
7. März 2021
Every two years, Italian Marine Geologists are invited to gather in the ‘Convegno dei Geologi Marini Italiani’ (Conference of Italian Marine Geologists) to share their ideas and latest research. Special attention is given to young researches (< 35 years old), not yet having a fixed position in Universities or Research Institutes. Aiming to boost their career, four young researchers have been awarded with prizes offered by the Sponsors of the conference, acknowledging the originality and significance of their research in 2019 to 2021. Among them, Mathia Sabino from Universität Hamburg has been awarded with the prize ‘Mainport’. Mathia is a doctoral student in the working group ‘Geology in the Earth System’. His research focuses on the reconstruction of the climate and water column conditions in the Mediterranean Basin during the late Miocene, about 6 million years ago. At that time, the basin was almost completely isolated from the global oceans, leading to profound changes in the hydrological cycle and the deposition of the youngest basin-wide salt deposit on Earth, the Mediterranean Salt Giant.
