Study Abroad During the Geography Degree Program

A study abroad period during your degree offers students a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons. In addition to the academic enrichment provided by a semester or year abroad, students can develop foreign-language proficiency and intercultural competencies. By studying at a partner university overseas, students can shape an individual academic profile. Moreover, completing a study abroad period can enhance graduates’ prospects in internationally oriented career fields.

A study abroad period is possible in all degree programs. In the B.Sc. Geography International program, a year abroad is even a compulsory component of the degree. Students may choose either to complete two semesters at a foreign host university, or to combine one semester of study with a full-time internship lasting four months. Prior to going abroad, detailed arrangements are made regarding the courses to be taken at the host institution, and a Learning Agreement is concluded. After the study abroad period, the credits earned abroad are recognized.

The Department of Geography maintains a wide network of partner universities in both Europe and outside Europe. Applications for study places and scholarships are coordinated through the Department of Geography. In addition, students may apply for places at University of Hamburg partner universities or arrange a study place at a university of their choice independently.
