Internship abroad – general information

An internship abroad within the Geography degree programs can be integrated in different ways. For example, in the Bachelor’s program in Geography at the University of Hamburg, there is a required 9-week internship of 40 hours per week. The Bachelor’s program Geography International provides the possibility to substitute one semester of the study abroad with a four-month, full-time internship. And, of course, internships abroad can also be done in the Master’s program or voluntarily in the period between the Bachelor’s and the Master’s.

Finding an internship placement and organizing the process are the students’ responsibility. However, on this page we aim to support you by providing an internship database and guidance on where you can seek assistance with the organization process, including useful links, current deadlines or calls for applications, and contact information for personal counselling.

For the recognition of the internship as part of your degree, the Student Advisory Office (Studienbüro) is responsible. You should reach out to them before completing the internship and again after you have received written confirmation of your placement. This is the only way to ensure that the internship will be properly credited toward your programme requirements.

If you want to do an internship abroad in the Bachelor’s program, in the Master’s program, or in between:

You can complete your required internship abroad. A voluntary internship abroad is also possible—either in the Master’s program or, for example, between the Bachelor’s and the Master’s. In the latter case, you should carefully consider how the internship can be integrated into your degree plan and timetable. Whether the internship is required or voluntary is primarily relevant for the funding options available, and therefore should be considered at the planning stage.

If you wish to complete an internship during the Bachelor’s program Geography International, the study abroad year is structured in two possible ways. It can either be completed through two semesters of study at one of the partner universities, or through one semester of study at the home university combined with one semester of full-time internship (four months) abroad (see program structure). Internships may be carried out in the partner universities’ countries outside Europe as well as within Europe under ERASMUS.
