This summer, the newly formed ERC bridge group COLDSPOT (UHH & Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research) carried out its first field campaign for the project in the beautiful Kilpisjärvi region of the Finnish Arctic. Team members Aimée Pellissier-Tanon, Friederike Neiske, Maren Jenrich and Carolina Voigt studied arctic tundra and boreal forest sites in which soils and vegetation may act as sinks for the greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide.

The team measured greenhouse gas fluxed in different environments – including upland tundra, mountain birch forest and permafrost peatlands – to better understand the mechanisms behind net greenhouse gas consumption in these “coldspot” areas. To link gas uptake with biotic processes and nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas flux measurements were coupled with soil sampling for nutrient extraction, incubations and microbial analyses.
