Abstract:
As part of a collection of applications for DFG funding of an integrated study of plume-ridge interaction we were granted funding for an experimental seismological study of a particularly complex interaction zone: the Tjörnes Fracture Zone (TFZ). The geodynamical situation in the TFZ is poorly studied and was proposed to be closely related to initial breakup after the surfacing of a plume. Closely linked TFZ proposals are shallow seismic studies (funded outside the bunch and carrying the name TJOSTE first at the University of Kiel) and geochemical sampling and analysis (currently funded through the bunch at the University of Bremen). International cooperation for this experiment includes partners from Iceland and Sweden making up the NICE consortium. A collaboration proposal "NorthIce" has been handed in to the Swedisch Vetenskapsrådet by Dr. A. Tryggvasson. We will have access to R/V Drofn from 28/06/2004 to 09/07/2004 and R/V Arni Fridriksson from 08/09/2004 to 18/09/2004. The common aim is to understand the ridge-plume tectonics, dynamics and seismic hazard within the region.
