Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CliCCS)
The CLICCS (Climate, Climatic Change, and Society) Excellence Cluster at the University of Hamburg is a prominent research initiative focused on understanding climate change and its complex interactions with society. CLICCS brings together interdisciplinary expertise from geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, political science, sociology, and other fields to explore both the natural climate system and the societal responses to climate risks. The initiative seeks to answer critical questions about the limits of human adaptation to climate change and to investigate which climate futures remain possible based on current and emerging trends. By integrating climate science with social sciences, CLICCS aims to produce research that supports transformative policies and sustainable responses to global climate challenges.
In this context, the seismology group within CLiCCS is advancing urban climate research by using seismic interferometry to monitor groundwater and temperature changes in urban areas. This approach leverages seismic data to assess subsurface environmental variations, contributing valuable insights into urban groundwater dynamics and thermal conditions, which are essential for managing urban resilience and sustainability in a changing climate.
