SiK: Urban trees in climate change: Climate impact monitoring and adaptation

Project description
The aim of the project is to develop an integrating concept for adapting Hamburg's stock of street trees to climate change. The concept includes climate impact monitoring for street trees as well as the development of strategies and measures for the adaptation of street trees to climate change and is to be incorporated into the "Climate Impact Monitoring" and the "Adaptation Action Plan" of the City of Hamburg. The vulnerability of tree species to drought stress is assessed on the basis of scientific studies. An edaphic and soil hydrological assessment of street tree sites is carried out, the growth performance and ecophysiological condition of selected street trees is recorded and a stress indicator is developed. With the help of a physically based modelling of the soil water balance, it will be examined whether and how often situations of drought-related stress have occurred and are to be expected. Together with the authorities responsible for the maintenance and development of Hamburg's tree population, instruments and measures are being developed that are suitable for maintaining and further developing the tree population in times of climate change. Within the framework of the project, an interdisciplinary regional network will be established, bringing together stakeholders important for the adaptation of Hamburg's urban trees to climate change and taking on the task of further developing and implementing an integrated concept for urban trees in a changing climate.
