Hardwood floodplain forests are species-rich and highly endangered habitats that provide important ecosystem services. Among other things, they contribute to flood retention and act as carbon sinks. In the area of the Lower Middle Elbe, studies on biodiversity and the carbon balance in hardwood floodplain forests of different ages will be carried out for vegetation and soil, and the water balance will be analyzed as a formative site factor.
