The joint project sea4soCiety aims to develop innovative and socially accepted approaches to better utilise the natural potential for carbon storage in vegetation-rich coastal ecosystems. As part of the research mission "Marine Carbon Sinks in Decarbonisation Pathways" of the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM), sea4soCiety will assess the storage capacity for "blue carbon" in four different types of coastal ecosystems (seagrass, macroalgae, salt marsh and mangroves) on the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts, in the Caribbean (Colombia) and on Indonesian coasts.

The sub-project of the sea4soCiety of the working group AG Ratter is conducting participatory research on social acceptance and the interrelationships of blue carbon storage in terms of co-benefits, risks, governance and economic valorisation potential.
