Transfer

The Department of Earth System Sciences of the University of Hamburg aims to translate scientific knowledge about the complex interactions within the Earth system into concrete societal benefits. We actively promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise between our university's research and education on one hand, and industry, politics, and society on the other. Through targeted technology and knowledge transfer in decision-making processes and educational initiatives, we strive to make a substantial contribution to addressing the global environmental crises, taking seriously the diverse knowledge types and perspectives of the stakeholders involved.

 

Important pillars of our transfer activities include:

  • Scientific Consulting for Politics and Society

We actively contribute our scientific expertise and experience to political decision-making processes at the municipal, national, and international levels. Through consulting services, political recommendations, and participation in expert committees, we support the development of evidence-based policies for the protection of the Earth system and the promotion of sustainable development.

  • Development of Innovative Strategies and Technologies

Based on our solid scientific foundations, we develop innovative strategies and technologies for sustainable use of geo-resources, climate protection, and climate change adaptation in collaboration with partners from industry, government, and NGOs. The goal is the co-creation of science-based, practical solutions.

  • Transdisciplinary Dialogues and Co-Creative Knowledge Production on Equal Footing

We initiate and engage in various transdisciplinary formats to deepen our understanding of societal challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing Earth system, together with our partners from educational institutions, industry, and civil society. In addition to public lectures, training, and digital learning platforms, we increasingly rely on co-creative and reflective working methods that actively involve our non-university partners.
