At the center of this initiative are the science, research, and teaching that will find a new home in the House of Earth or will need to be reorganized at the new location. Specifically, this includes the Department of Earth System Sciences, comprising its eight institutes: the Institute of Geography, the Institute of Geology, and the Mineralogy-Petrology Institute, which will merge with the Institute of Geology during the relocation. The geoscientific sector of the department will also encompass the Institute of Soil Science, which will be relocated from Allende-Platz 2 to the House of Earth, as well as the geophysical institutes for Geophysics, Oceanography (from Bundesstraße 53), and the Meteorological Institute. Additionally, the Research Center for Sustainability and Climate Risks, along with central organizational units of the department, will also be moving there.
Furthermore, the House of Earth will host a second pillar. This includes the Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Science from the Department of Biology, which also comprises the German Center for Marine Biodiversity Research. Naturally, our Excellence Cluster for Climate, Climatic Change & Society, abbreviated as CLICCS, is included as well. As part of the move, we will also bring the Visual Data Analysis Group from the RRZ closer to the cluster. Closely related to this, the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) will move into the House of Earth, where it is intended to work closely with the Center for Sustainable Society Research. Additionally, there are plans for the Center for Natural Science and Peace Research to be accommodated in the House of Earth. Together, these entities constitute the second pillar of science within the House of Earth.
We have key stakeholders that shape the framework conditions: the Authority for Science, Research, Equality, and Districts (BWFGB) and the responsible organization, Building Management Hamburg (GMH). At the heart of the university's internal commissioning and organization of the move is the project management, which is outsourced to the company Arcadis. The overall project is overseen by a steering committee chaired by the Chancellor of UHH, which includes representatives from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Natural Sciences (MIN), the head of the Department of Earth System Sciences, Mr. Peckmann, and for CEN and CLICCS, Ms. Baehr and Mr. Perino. In day-to-day operations, project management is guided by the head of real estate management, Mr. Marschner, and the science coordinator, Mr. Meissner, both of whom also participate in the steering committee meetings. The scientific coordination, supported by the external service provider AML, represents the scientific side in daily project coordination. The head of real estate management oversees the offices involved in the construction project, space management, and technical building management, which is also responsible for organizing relocations, as well as infrastructural building management, which includes service teams and the organization of closures, cleaning, etc. Additionally, other important roles in the upcoming process include the Regional Computing Center and the Occupational Safety Office.
