CarboPerm - Carbon in Permafrost
Project description
The aim of this project is to investigate the formation, turnover and release of organic carbon in permafrost. In the framework of a multidisciplinary research approach we will improve the understanding of the future development of permafrost landscapes in the course of global warming and its effects on the carbon and trace gas balance. The knowledge gained contributes to concepts for action for the sustainable use of our Earth system.
The CarboPerm project aims to gain new, fundamental insights into the quality, quantity, degradability and transport of the organic matter fixed in permafrost. For this purpose, studies of the recent carbon cycle in the Siberian Arctic are combined with detailed reconstructions of carbon dynamics in connection with environmental changes in the past and simulated with the help of models. Such a comprehensive methodological approach has not yet been realised for the permafrost region and is being implemented in close cooperation with Russian research institutes.
