Abschlusszeugnisse
If possible, a certificate should be issued within 4 weeks of passing the final examination. For this purpose, we require a completed certificate request from you.
Please check whether all required achievements are listed in the study results. Please look at the bottom of the page. The line beginning with "Sum [program] " must contain the number of credit points required for graduation, and the check mark must be placed at the end of the line.
Please also check whether all achievements have been assigned correctly. If there are still discrepancies, please clarify them in good time. Please do not hesitate to ask the Academic Services Office for help.
If your study results are complete, please fill in the request form on your PC. In particular, we need the date on which you have completed your last examination (e.g. date of a written exam, submission of the thesis, date of colloquium or date of issue of your practical work certificate) and the course or module in which this work was completed. Please submit the completed and signed form to the Academic Services Office (exam management).
There are three options for receipt of the the documents [currently only via mail]:
- You collect the documents personally. Proof of identity including a photograph is required.
- You authorise a person of trust to collect the documents. For this purpose, we require a copy of your identity card and a letter of authorisation with the full name, date and place of birth of the authorised person. The authorised person has to present a proof of identity including a photograph when collecting the documents.
- You instruct the Office of Academic Affairs for Earth Sciences in writing to send you the documents by "Deutsche Post".For this purpose, you must provide us with a copy of your identity card. Dispatch is only possible within Germany. We expressly point out that the Academic Services Office Earth Sciences assumes no liability whatsoever, e.g. for transport damages, delayed delivery or loss.
CEN, the university's Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability, invites all Master and PhD-students of the departmen who have completed their degree to participate in a graduation ceremony early each calendar year. If you are interested, please contact graduation.cen"AT"uni-hamburg.de for more information.

Anerkennung von Leistungen
General information
Academic achievements from a previous program at the Universität Hamburg or another university in Germany or abroad can be recognized in your current program. Recognition is only possible if there is an equivalent in your current degree programme for the achievement to be recognized.
Recognition is not possible if
- the achievement for which recognition is sought has already been passed,
- you are "hard and fast" registered for the exam (i.e. after the deregistration period has ended) or have already failed the exam at least once.
- an application is made for recognition as "additional achievement".
Please apply for recognition in STiNE under Studying -> Study management -> Applications. From the list select "V Fak. MIN Antrag auf Anerkennung von Leistungen" and follow the instructions. After you have saved and sent the application, please inform the study coordinator for your degree program by e-mail stating the application number.
Please hand in your proof of achievement (e.g. transcript of records) to the responsible coordinator and sign the prepared application. If the achievement to be recognised is recorded in STiNE, a corresponding note is sufficient.
The chairperson of the examination board will decide on your application. You will be informed of the decision in writing by e-mail or post.
Recognition of language classes
The department's examination boards have adopted simplified regulations for the integration of language classes as a "free electable" (part of the Freier Wahlbereich). In the following table, languages and language levels are listed which can be integrated without going through the recognition process described above.
Programme | English | Other languages (except German) |
B.Sc. Geographie | all levels | all levels |
M.Sc. Geographie | all levels | all levels |
B.Sc. Geowissenschaften | all levels | all levels |
M.Sc. Geowissenschaften | all levels | all levels |
B.Sc. Meteorologie | all levels | all levels |
M.Sc. Meteorologie | B2 and higher | all levels |
B.Sc. Geophysik/Ozeanographie | C1 and higher | Spanish, French C1 and higher; other languages all levels |
M.Sc. Geophysik | C1 and higher | Spanish, French C1 and higher; other languages all levels |
For all languages and levels givein in the table, you can hand in the certificate of the respective language class directly to you exam manager. Recognition of language levels not specified above is generally not possible.

Anmeldung der Bachelor- oder Masterarbeit
The thesis "..is a demonstration of the candidate's ability to independently address a problem from the respective field of study in accordance with academic methods within a set period of time" (Section 14 of the Examination Regulations, non-binding translation).
Before you apply for admission to your final thesis, you must ensure that you meet the admission requirements. You will find these in the subject-specific regulations for your degree program.
In addition, you must clarify whether the examiners (supervisor and 2nd reviewer) have been admitted by the examination board. If necessary, the admission must first be applied for at the examination board.
If both prerequisites are fulfilled, proceed as follows in cooperation with the supervisor of your thesis [process valid in this form as long as the ASO is closed]:
- Please fill in the form (see below) online (on PC); handwritten forms will not be accepted! The form consists of one page to be filled in and one page of information in German (page 4) and English (page 5).
- The fields bordered in red are mandatory fields and must be completed.
- Print out the completed application form and sign in the line marked "Hamburg, d.".
- Have the form signed by your supervisor.
- After the topic has been issued, the application must be submitted immediately to the Academic Services Office for Earth Sciences (exam management). For this purpose, please send a scan of the form to the ASO via email.
- You will receive the form signed in turn by the ASO via email. This counts as official note of admission to the final thesis.
-
By handing in the form, you confirm that you have acknowledged the instructions on page 5 of the application form.
- Please note that you must be matriculated until you have passed all (partial) examinations. After exmatriculation, your examination entitlement expires.

Anmeldung zu Prüfungen
Students have to explicitely register for examinations in STiNE.
This can be done during the registration periods at the beginning of the semester. Thereafter, all examinations whose dates are published in STiNE can be registered up to seven days before the examination. Until three days before the exam, it is possible to change the examination date or to cancel the examination without giving reasons. After that the registration is binding, and a withdrawal is only possible for an important reason (e.g. illness).
The registration takes place under the menu item "Exams" via the button "Exams offered for registration" or the menu item "Register for exams". You select an examination date and click on "Register". Then enter the required iTAN and confirm with "Send". Under "Exams" you can see which exams you have already registered for.
If it is not possible to register in Stine, e.g. because no date has been set due to the type of examination, you can register through the Academic Services Office. Please register in person or by e-mail with the required information (name, matriculation number, examination and examination date) at the Academic Services Office (Examination Management) at least three days before the examination.
Please also note the following:
- You can only register for a repeat examination if you can see in Stine ("Exam results") that you have not passed the previous attempt.
- You will not be routinely registered for (re-)examinations by the Academic Services Office.
- You must ensure that you are registered in STiNE before the exam. An examination registration is not possible after the examination date.

Krankmeldungen
If you are ill at an examination appointment, a doctor must certify that you are incapable of examination. Please submit the doctor's certificate together with the completed sickness notification form (PDF) personally or by post to the Academic Services Office (exam-management). You must have done this immediately, at the latest 10 days after the onset of the illness (as certified). The examination board responsible will decide on late notifications of illness.
If you take part in an examination despite having received a certificate, you implicitely declare that you are fit for the examination. The certificate originally submitted will then be invalid. If you wish to register for further examinations during the period of the sickness certificate, you will need a new certificate.
Please remember to register in STiNE for a repeat examination.
The "sick notification form" is not an application to extend the processing time for a thesis (Bachelor, Master, Diploma). In such cases, please make an informal application and submit it to the Academic Services Office together with your medical certificate. The application must be submitted well before the end of the processing period.
Get well soon!
