Marine Geophysics
Overview
Research in the working group “Marine Geophysics” concentrates on the investigation of those earth processes that affect the topography of the seafloor. Our main techniques are reflection seismology, multibeam and parametric sediment subbottom profiler measurements. For some of our experiments we use ocean-bottom seismometers for wired-angle reflection / refraction seismology, a marine gravimeter or magnetometers (gradiometer). For instance, we are interested the life cycles of submarine volcanoes, mass wasting, current- sediment interaction, salt tectonics, fluid migration and rift processes. Our research is interdisciplinary, we cooperate with geologists, petrologists and geochemists.
Regional studies group along the Africa-Eurasian collision zone, e.g., the Azores, the Ionian Sea, the Aegean or the Levant Basin. We further investigate the Sierra Leone Rise (equatorial eastern Atlantic) or the Gulf of Mexico. Last not least, we investigate the geology of the Baltic Sea, where we train our BSc-students mainly in the use of our seismic and hydroacoustic equipment.
