Mai 2014: Former geophysical researcher from Hamburg takes up work on ISS

On 28.5.2014 at 21.56 hours CEST, Dr. Alexander Gerst embarks from Baikonur on a six months sojourn on the International Space Station ISS. From 2004 to 2009, Alexander worked on his Ph.D. at the Institute of Geophysics in Hamburg. In 2009, he was chosen out of more than 8,000 applicants to become an astronaut. He is the only scientist among the successful applicants.

During his stay, Alexander will continue his research on volcanoes, amongst others: in a joint project between Klemen Zaksek and Matthias Hort from Hamburg and the Crew Earth Observations of NASA, Alexander will monitor ash rich volcanoes.
