Alexander Gerst is on his second mission on the International Space Station ISS after 2014.
He worked at the Institute of Geophysics from 2004 to 2009 and completed his doctorate in 2010 with a thesis on the eruption dynamics of Mt. Erebus. Alex remained connected to the Institute and its research even after joining the ESA Astronaut corps. For example, during his mission in 2014 he supported a project by Dr. Zaksek with very special photographic registrations of volcanic eruption columns.
