Marine geophysical GEOBASIS-3D kicks-off

The research vessel RV MARIA S. MERIAN left the port of Emden last Wednesday evening and started its research work in the German North Sea shortly afterwards. The aim of this BGR-led project, in which geophysicists from our institute were involved in the application, is to investigate the integrity of barrier formations of Cenozoic shales. In the context of the energy transition, the integrity of barriers and seals in the deep subsurface is becoming increasingly important for storage purposes, e.g. for synthetic energy gases. Two of our MSc students are on board and support the research work with their methods developed at the Institute of Geophysics.
