This year's Nobel Prize in Physics went to the former director of the Institute of Geophysics, Prof. Dr. Klaus Hasselmann. The Institute was founded in 1970 by merging the Department of Theoretical Geophysics, which had been working on weak interactions in statistical wave fields especially in the ocean under Klaus Hasselmann's leadership since 1966, with the former Institute for the Physics of the Earth. In 1975, Hasselmann took over the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.
