Scientific Drilling in the Aegean Sea (International Ocean Discovery Project Exp. 398)

After several years of preparation, the scientific drilling vessel JOIDES RESOLUTION started the first drilling north of the volcanic island Santorini in the central Aegean Sea. The two marine geophysicists from the Hamburg Institute of Geophysics on board are primarily concerned with 1. reconstructing the eruption history and chronology of these dangerous volcanoes from their beginnings to the present day, 2. investigating the connections and feedbacks between regional tectonics and volcanism, and 3. reconstructing the iconic Minoan eruption of Santorini 3600 yrs ago.
