On the way to the eternal ice of Antarctica
5 January 2023
Two geophysicists of the institute left Cape Town/South Africa shortly before Christmas with the research icebreaker POLARSTERN and will participate in marine seismic measurements of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) off the Antarctic ice shelf at the beginning of January. The aim of the Hamburg scientists' subproject is to investigate whether and where the numerous ice advances of the Antarctic ice sheet have reactivated tectonic faults.
