“Wissen vom Fass” once again brings researchers from all disciplines together this year in Hamburg’s bars and pubs. The talks begin on Thursday, June 12th, at 8 PM.
Does Hamburg have good vibrations? (Talk in English)
Céline Hadziioannou
Clubraum Deutsche Seemannsmission, Große Elbstraße 132, 22767 Hamburg | Altona
Seismology is usually associated with the study of destructive earthquakes, but can seismologists also hear the subtle whispers of other Earth phenomena? And how do Taylor Swift, Deichkind and HSV make Hamburg swing? We will talk about how we can use seismic waves to listen to how the ground dynamically changes beneath our feet and what role the oceans play in this. Can we detect earthquakes by using internet glass fiber? And how do we use it to help improve some experiments at DESY? I will give you the answers to these questions and show how they are connected!
Long term disposal of highly radioactive waste in northern Germany - a good idea? (Talk in German)
Christian Hübscher
Otzentreff, Otzenstrasse 4, 22767 Hamburg | St. Pauli
Salt domes in northern Germany are being considered as potential repositories for our nuclear waste. The radioactive waste would need to be stored there for one million years until the repository no longer poses any danger. Earth scientists understand how the planet may change during this time: ice glaciers that once covered northern Germany for long periods are expected to return in about 100,000 years—and then return nine more times—despite the catastrophic human-induced global warming. Geophysical data indicate that the effects of these future glaciations will be difficult to study.
