Welcome to the homepage of the Remote Sensing Working Group
The Remote Sensing Working Group, led by Prof. Dr. Olena Dubovyk, is a research team at the University of Hamburg. Our focus areas include remote sensing, geoinformatics, and spatial modeling.
We combine method-oriented fundamental research with application-oriented projects, particularly in the context of sustainable and responsible land use, environmental monitoring, and risk research.
Research Areas
- Remote sensing-based spatial monitoring of ecosystems with applications in land use/land cover change, degradation, and ecological resilience.
- Mapping and assessment of risks and impacts of natural disasters—such as floods, droughts, and wildfires—using Earth observation data from satellites and UAV-based platforms.
- Remote sensing for monitoring vegetation dynamics and biodiversity, including phenological analyses and habitat mapping.
- Remote sensing to support monitoring of international agreements, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and other global environmental treaties.
- Development and adaptation of methods for advanced remote sensing applications, including time-series analysis, machine learning, and spatial modeling techniques.
- Integration of multi-sensor and multi-scale data, combining satellite, aerial, UAV, and in-situ observations to improve spatial and temporal resolution in environmental monitoring.
